Both countries are EU members and in the Schengen Zone, which makes your move straightforward. Here's what you need to know.
🛂 Border & Customs
- No customs checks Hungary and Slovakia are both EU members — personal belongings move freely, no customs declarations needed for household goods.
- Schengen Area No passport checks at the border. Crossings are fast and efficient — typically a few minutes at most.
- VAT goods New or commercial goods may be subject to EU VAT rules. Personal belongings for your own use are fully exempt.
📋 Registration in Slovakia
- Register your address You need to register at your local municipal office (obecný úrad / mestský úrad) within a few days of moving in.
- EU citizens welcome As an EU citizen you have the right to live and work in Slovakia without a permit. The process is simple.
- Vehicle registration If you bring a car, you'll need to re-register it in Slovakia within 90 days at the district traffic authority.
📦 Packing Tips
- Label everything clearly Label boxes by room and contents. Our crew will place them exactly where you want them in your new home.
- Fragile items Tell us in advance about valuable or fragile items — we bring extra padding, blankets and straps for these.
- Use quality packing materials Invest in good double-walled cardboard boxes, bubble wrap and packing tape. Proper materials make a real difference to how your belongings arrive.

- Budapest → Bratislava Approx. 2.5–3 hours drive. Border crossing typically adds very little time.
- Budapest → Košice Approx. 4–5 hours. Route goes through eastern Slovakia via Miskolc.
- Miskolc → Košice Just 90 minutes. One of our most common short-haul international routes.
