Moving from Switzerland to Slovakia — Practical Info
Switzerland is not an EU member, which means there are a few extra steps compared to moves within the EU. Here's what you need to know — so there are no surprises on moving day.
🛂 Customs & Export
- Switzerland is not in the EU Exporting personal household goods from Switzerland into the EU requires a detailed inventory list (Umzugsgut / liste de déménagement). We help you prepare this.
- No import duty on used goods Personal belongings you've owned and used for at least 6 months are exempt from EU customs duty — as long as you're relocating your primary residence.
- New or unused items Brand-new or commercial goods may be subject to VAT and duty on entry into the EU. It's worth declaring these clearly to avoid delays at the border.
📋 Registration in Slovakia
- Register your address Register at your local obecný úrad / mestský úrad shortly after arrival. This unlocks access to healthcare, banking and other local services.
- Slovak citizens returning home If you're a Slovak citizen coming back from Switzerland, re-registration is straightforward. Bring your Swiss deregistration certificate (Abmeldebestätigung) to speed things up.
- Vehicle registration Swiss-registered vehicles must be re-registered in Slovakia within 90 days of establishing residency. Budget for Slovak vehicle inspection and registration fees.
📦 Packing for a Long Journey
- Prepare your inventory list early Swiss customs require a full list of items being exported. Starting this early reduces stress and avoids last-minute delays on moving day.
- High-value items Jewellery, watches, artwork and electronics should be listed separately with approximate values for customs purposes.
- Start packing early For a move of this distance, give yourself more time than you think you need. The earlier you start packing — especially with your customs inventory list — the smoother moving day will be.
⏱️ Typical Journey Times
- Zurich → Bratislava Approx. 8–9 hours drive via Austria (A1/A4). We typically plan this as a two-day operation for larger moves.
- Basel → Bratislava Approx. 8–8.5 hours via Germany and Austria. One of our most common Swiss routes.
- Geneva → Bratislava Approx. 10–11 hours. Always planned as a two-day move with an overnight stop for the crew.
